OpenAI has announced plans to remove several older AI models from ChatGPT, narrowing the list of options available to users. The change will take effect on Friday, February 13, when GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini will be discontinued within the chatbot interface.
According to the company, the move is unlikely to affect most users. OpenAI says the vast majority of conversations now run on GPT-5.2, and GPT-4o accounts for just a small fraction of daily usage. The retirement is part of an ongoing effort to streamline the platform and focus development on newer, more capable models.
This is not the first time GPT-4o has faced removal. The model was previously replaced last year with the launch of GPT-5, only to be reinstated after user feedback highlighted concerns about the transition. OpenAI has indicated that lessons from that episode influenced how its latest models were refined and rolled out.
With fewer legacy models in circulation, ChatGPT users can expect a more standardized experience centered around OpenAI’s current generation of AI systems.
