Google is expanding its AI-powered productivity tools by bringing audio summaries to Google Docs through its Gemini assistant. The feature, previously available in Google’s NotebookLM app, allows users to generate spoken summaries of documents directly inside Docs.
The AI-generated audio can run for several minutes and is compiled from information across different sections or tabs within a document. Users can access the feature by navigating to Tools and selecting the Audio option, which opens a small media player for playback. The player includes controls for adjusting speed from 0.5x to 2x and offers multiple voice styles such as narrator, persuader, and coach.
Google began rolling out the feature this week, though full availability may take up to 15 days. Once fully deployed, audio summaries will be accessible to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers. Education users will also be able to add the feature through select Google Education plans.
The move highlights Google’s broader push to integrate Gemini across its productivity ecosystem, turning documents into more interactive and accessible content. Audio summaries could be especially useful for students, researchers, and professionals who want to quickly review long documents or consume information while multitasking.
By bringing NotebookLM-style features into core Workspace apps, Google is positioning Gemini as a central assistant for writing, editing, and reviewing content. The rollout suggests that more multimodal AI tools could soon appear across Docs and other Google services.
