Google Gemini gains deeper access to personal data for smarter replies

Google is taking a more direct approach to personalization by introducing what it calls Personal Intelligence, a new feature that feeds select user data directly into its Gemini AI assistant. The idea is simple but far-reaching: instead of Google merely using your data in the background to rank emails or surface photos, Gemini can now actively reference information from apps like Gmail, Google Photos, and YouTube to provide more contextual and personalized responses. For now, the feature is limited to users in the United States who subscribe to either Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra, though Google says broader access—including free tiers—will come later.

In practice, Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to draw on your existing Google ecosystem data to answer questions or make suggestions that would otherwise require manual searching. Google frames this as a natural extension of things it already does behind the scenes, such as prioritizing emails in Gmail or filtering spam. In a blog post, the company outlined examples like recalling a photo you took of your car’s license plate or suggesting new tires after detecting a DMV-related notification. The pitch is convenience: if Google already has this data, why not let the AI use it more openly and interactively?

That convenience, however, comes with clear caveats. Google openly acknowledges that Gemini may misunderstand context or draw incorrect conclusions from incomplete data. Seeing hundreds of photos taken at a golf course, for example, might lead Gemini to assume you’re an avid golfer, even if you’re only there to support a family member. Google says users can correct these assumptions through direct feedback, but the system’s reliance on pattern recognition means nuance can still be lost.

Google also claims to have built guardrails into Personal Intelligence to prevent sensitive inferences, such as probing into health-related topics. Even so, the company admits that major life changes—like relationship shifts or a divorce—may not be properly understood by the AI. For users who opt in, enabling the feature is straightforward: open the Gemini app, head to Settings, tap Personal Intelligence, and choose which Google apps you want to connect.
