Microsoft Unveils More Affordable Surface Laptop and Pro, but 8GB RAM Makes a Comeback
Microsoft has expanded its Surface lineup with two new consumer-focused devices priced below $1,000. The company has introduced a 12-inch Surface Pro starting at $849 and a 13-inch Surface Laptop starting at $949, offering a more affordable alternative to its premium business models.
However, the lower prices come with a notable compromise: both entry-level models ship with just 8GB of RAM, marking the return of a memory configuration many thought had been left behind.
New Surface Devices Target Budget Buyers
The newly announced devices are designed for mainstream users rather than enterprise customers.
The base configurations include:
Surface Pro 12-inch – $849
- Snapdragon X Plus processor
- 8GB RAM
- 256GB SSD
Surface Laptop 13-inch – $949
- Snapdragon X Plus processor
- 8GB RAM
- 256GB SSD
Microsoft says higher-end configurations with additional memory and storage will also be available for customers who need more performance.
Lower Price Comes With Trade-Offs
While the reduced pricing makes Surface devices more accessible, the decision to equip entry-level models with only 8GB of memory has drawn attention.
Modern workloads—including multitasking, running numerous browser tabs, and AI-powered Windows features—can quickly consume available memory, potentially leading to slower performance as Windows relies more heavily on SSD storage.
Microsoft says it has optimized Windows 11 to reduce memory usage by:
- Lowering the default memory footprint
- Releasing unused memory more quickly
- Giving users greater control over startup apps
- Reducing background processes on lower-memory systems
Even so, 8GB remains a modest amount of RAM by today’s standards.
Memory Prices Continue to Rise
Microsoft attributes the configuration choices in part to the ongoing increase in memory and storage costs.
According to the company, offering an 8GB model creates a more affordable entry point for users whose workloads primarily consist of:
- Web browsing
- Office productivity
- Video streaming
- Email and communication
For more demanding tasks, Microsoft recommends higher-capacity configurations.
Competition Is Getting Tougher
The budget laptop market has become increasingly competitive.
Recent devices such as Apple’s MacBook Neo and Dell’s entry-level XPS 13 have demonstrated that sub-$1,000 laptops can still deliver strong everyday performance.
Because Apple controls both its hardware and software, its devices tend to manage limited memory more efficiently, making Microsoft’s decision to launch new Surface models with 8GB of RAM particularly noteworthy.
A More Affordable Way Into the Surface Ecosystem
Despite the memory limitation, the new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro represent Microsoft’s most affordable modern Surface devices in years.
For users seeking a lightweight Windows laptop for everyday computing, the new models provide a lower-cost entry into the Surface lineup. However, buyers who expect to multitask heavily or keep their devices for several years may find that upgrading to a 16GB configuration is a more future-proof investment.
