‘Powered by SteamOS’ Branding from Valve Suggests New Hardware

Valve’s “Powered by SteamOS” Logo Hints at New Steam-Powered Hardware

Valve has recently updated its branding guidelines, unveiling a new “Powered by SteamOS” logo for hardware partners looking to ship devices running SteamOS. According to Valve’s documentation, this logo is used to indicate that a hardware device will boot directly into SteamOS upon startup, and will ship with a SteamOS image developed in close collaboration with Valve.

Currently, the only device available with SteamOS pre-installed is the Steam Deck. However, this new branding suggests that Valve may be preparing to expand its SteamOS ecosystem with additional hardware partners. This could mark a return to Steam Machines, Valve’s short-lived program from 2015 that sought to bring Linux-based gaming systems to consumers in collaboration with brands like Alienware.

Although speculative, there are indications that Valve may be working with companies like Asus to bring SteamOS to devices like the ROG Ally, a popular handheld gaming PC. With the shortcomings of Windows on handheld gaming devices, partnering with Valve for SteamOS could provide a smoother, more optimized experience. Keep an eye on CES in a month, as Valve could have exciting announcements regarding new Steam-powered hardware.
