Samsung’s New Gaming Monitors Feature Glasses-Free 3D Technology

Samsung is making waves at Gamescom with its latest lineup of gaming monitors, including new OLED models in 34-inch and 49-inch sizes. However, the highlight of the showcase is undoubtedly the Odyssey 3D, which promises to deliver 3D gaming and video without requiring 3D glasses.

Samsung’s approach to glasses-free 3D builds on previous technologies, like the lenticular displays used in the Nintendo 3DS, but with significant advancements. The Odyssey 3D utilizes an advanced “light field” panel technology combined with eye tracking and view mapping. This setup features cameras and sensors that adjust the 3D display in real time, enhancing the depth perception and immersion.

The Odyssey 3D aims to address the shortcomings of earlier glasses-free 3D displays, featuring impressive specs like a 165Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time across its 27-inch and 37-inch models. It also supports AMD FreeSync Premium to prevent screen tearing and stuttering. For times when 3D isn’t desired, users can switch to a standard 2D mode easily.

Although Samsung’s Odyssey 3D monitors appear to be well-designed and ready for the market, there’s no word yet on release dates or pricing. With past attempts at 3D technology, such as those by Acer, not making a major impact, it remains to be seen if Samsung can succeed where others have struggled and how consumers will respond to the pricing of this innovative technology.
