The sixth public beta of iOS 18, launched on August 29, introduces exciting new features to the Maps app, including the ability to create custom routes. This addition is particularly useful for outdoor enthusiasts looking to map out their hikes, runs, or walks. With the updated Maps app, users can design routes, calculate distances, and monitor elevation changes, enhancing the overall planning experience for any adventure.

To create a custom route, open the Maps app, then long-press your desired starting point to drop a pin. Tap “More” and choose “Create a Custom Route.” You can then plot your route by tapping on different points of interest or specific locations on the map. The app provides three route types: Reverse, Out & Back, and Close Loop. Once your route is complete, save it by naming it and selecting “Done.”

After saving, your route will appear in the Maps Library under “Places, Guides and Routes,” where you can select “Routes” to view and navigate your custom path. If you’re not near the start of your route, you can get directions to it as well.

Important: As iOS 18 is still in beta, users might encounter some bugs. It’s recommended to test these features on a secondary device to avoid issues on your main phone. The official release of iOS 18 is expected this fall, with ongoing updates likely addressing any beta-specific concerns.
