Kotlin Makes Its Mark in the Tiobe Index’s Top 20

JetBrains’ Kotlin, designed for Android, JVM, and multiplatform development, has secured its position as the 20th most popular programming language in the Tiobe Index.

Kotlin, the modern programming language developed by JetBrains, has achieved a notable milestone by securing a spot in the top 20 of Tiobe’s monthly programming language popularity index. As of September 2023, Kotlin ranks 20th with a rating of 0.90%. This marks a significant achievement for the language, especially considering its growth trajectory since Google endorsed it as a first-class language for Android development back in 2017.

The Tiobe Programming Community index assesses programming languages based on various metrics, including the number of engineers, online courses, and third-party vendors associated with each language. This formula captures the breadth of interest and activity surrounding a programming language, making it a reliable indicator of trends in the software development landscape. Kotlin’s ascent in the rankings highlights its increasing relevance and usage in modern software projects.

Kotlin’s journey to the top 20 is a testament to the vibrant and expanding community that surrounds it. Since its inception, Kotlin has gained traction among developers for its expressive syntax, interoperability with Java, and support for functional programming paradigms. These features have contributed to its growing adoption in both Android and server-side development, making it a strong contender in a space traditionally dominated by Java.

However, Kotlin still faces challenges as it competes with established languages like Java. Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen noted that while Kotlin is a formidable competitor, Java’s extensive ecosystem and larger pool of developers present hurdles for Kotlin’s sustained growth. The language’s success will depend on whether it can maintain its position in the rankings and continue to attract new users and projects.

In the wake of this achievement, the Kotlin community is energized, with developers eager to explore the language’s capabilities further. JetBrains continues to enhance Kotlin’s features, providing developers with robust tools and libraries that streamline the development process. This ongoing support is vital for ensuring Kotlin’s continued relevance and for fostering a thriving developer ecosystem.

As Kotlin solidifies its standing in the programming world, it will be interesting to observe how it adapts to the evolving needs of developers and businesses alike. Will it maintain its momentum and challenge more established languages, or will it encounter barriers that hinder its progress? Only time will tell, but for now, Kotlin’s entry into the Tiobe top 20 is a clear indicator of its growing importance in software development.
