ChatGPT Gets Smarter Memory With New “Dreaming” Feature

OpenAI has unveiled a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system with a new feature called Dreaming, designed to help the AI better understand users over time and provide more personalized responses.

The feature marks the latest step in ChatGPT’s evolution from isolated conversations toward a more persistent and context-aware assistant.

From Separate Chats to Long-Term Memory

When ChatGPT first launched, every conversation existed in complete isolation. The AI could only respond based on information provided within the current chat session.

OpenAI later introduced memory capabilities that allowed users to explicitly tell ChatGPT what information to remember. This was followed by broader memory improvements that enabled the chatbot to reference details from previous conversations.

The new Dreaming system takes that concept even further.

    How Dreaming Works

According to OpenAI, Dreaming can automatically organize and refine ChatGPT’s memory in the background by reviewing information gathered across a user’s chat history.

Rather than simply storing individual facts, the system analyzes conversations collectively to build a more coherent understanding of a user’s preferences, habits, interests and recurring topics.

OpenAI says Dreaming allows ChatGPT to:

    • Learn from multiple conversations
    • Connect information across different chats
    • Continuously update memory relevance
    • Deliver more personalized responses
    • Surface the most useful context when needed

The goal is to ensure ChatGPT always has access to the most current and meaningful information about the user.

    Memory Summary Now Available

Alongside Dreaming, OpenAI has introduced a new memory summary feature.

Users can now view a consolidated overview of what ChatGPT remembers about them. The summary provides a transparent look at stored preferences, interests and other remembered details.

If any information is outdated, incorrect or no longer relevant, users can directly edit or remove it.

This gives users greater control over how ChatGPT understands and personalizes future conversations.

    Gradual Rollout Begins

Dreaming V3 is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States.

OpenAI says availability will expand over the coming weeks to additional countries and eventually to users on the Free and Go plans.

The update represents one of the most significant memory improvements yet, moving ChatGPT closer to functioning as a long-term personal assistant that can learn and adapt over time while maintaining user control over stored information.
