C++ Continues to Rise, Narrowing the Gap with C

C++ is rapidly gaining traction, potentially outpacing C, while Cobol makes a surprising return to the top 20 programming languages.

C++ is on the rise, having recently overtaken Java in the Tiobe index of programming language popularity. As of July 2023, C++ secured the third position in the index, closing in on C, which holds the second spot. This shift in rankings indicates a growing trend in the software development landscape, where C++ could soon rival C’s long-standing dominance. Python continues to lead the pack, while Java remains in fourth place.

The increased popularity of C++ can be attributed to its performance advantages, particularly in fields that require high efficiency and scalability. Paul Jansen, CEO of Tiobe, notes that while C has historically dominated performance-critical applications, it lacks scalability as systems become more complex and larger. C++ offers enhanced features and a more modern approach to development, making it the preferred choice in industries such as automotive, financial trading, medical technologies, and semiconductors. These sectors demand robust solutions that can handle intensive computing tasks and complex algorithms, aligning well with C++’s capabilities.

JavaScript also made notable strides in the Tiobe index, achieving its highest ranking yet at sixth place. This growth reflects the language’s sustained relevance in web development and its ability to adapt to evolving technologies. Jansen speculates that JavaScript’s rise might be linked to the gradual decline of Visual Basic, as developers increasingly gravitate towards more versatile and widely-used languages for building dynamic web applications.

Interestingly, Cobol has made a surprising comeback, re-entering the top 20 programming languages after a long absence. Ranking 20th, Cobol’s resurgence can be attributed to the continued reliance on legacy systems in various industries, particularly in banking and finance. Despite being considered outdated by many, Cobol remains a critical language for maintaining and updating these essential systems, demonstrating the ongoing demand for skilled developers in this area.

Tiobe’s monthly index is compiled using a formula that evaluates the number of skilled engineers, available courses, and third-party vendors associated with each programming language globally. The index leverages data from popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Wikipedia to provide insights into language trends. This methodology helps capture the evolving dynamics of programming languages, offering a glimpse into the future of software development.

As C++ continues its ascent, developers and organizations must stay informed about these trends to make strategic decisions regarding their technology stacks. Understanding the strengths and applications of each language can help guide choices that align with business goals and project requirements. The competitive landscape of programming languages is constantly shifting, and being aware of these changes can position developers and organizations for success in an increasingly complex digital world.
