ChromeOS M131 Update Introduces Safety Reset and Flash Notifications
Google unveiled ChromeOS Version M131 on Friday, bringing with it significant new features, including the highly anticipated “Safety Reset.” This tool allows Chromebook users to reinstall ChromeOS without erasing their personal data. It resets network settings, the default search engine, and other Chrome-related configurations like extensions, shortcuts, cookies, and site data, but crucially keeps files, passwords, tabs, bookmarks, and browsing history intact.
Previously, users had to use the Powerwash feature to restore their device to a clean slate, which could result in data loss. Safety Reset is a less disruptive option, offering a great alternative for troubleshooting Chromebook issues.
Additionally, M131 introduces “Flash Notifications,” which enhance the visibility of alerts. Rather than the typical small pop-up notification, Flash Notifications will briefly flash the entire screen, ensuring you won’t miss important updates.
The update is gradually rolling out, so if you don’t have it yet, you’ll need to wait for it to be available on your device.
