Microsoft Unlocks Free Access to OpenAI’s o1 Model in Copilot
Microsoft is taking a bold step in AI accessibility, offering free and unlimited access to OpenAI’s o1 model via Copilot’s new “Think Deeper” feature. This powerful model, previously available only through ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) or ChatGPT Plus ($20/month with limits), is now integrated into Copilot at no cost.
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman announced that Copilot users everywhere can now leverage o1-powered AI responses. By enabling the “Think Deeper” toggle in Copilot on Windows or at copilot.microsoft.com, users can generate more detailed insights, complex analysis, and even functional code. Think Deeper isn’t designed as a search engine, but it excels at structured reasoning, historical analysis, and software engineering challenges. For example, it can generate C# code for a Windows maze application based on a user’s name, providing a thorough step-by-step process.
Notably, Microsoft hasn’t hinted at any future monetization for Think Deeper, setting it apart from OpenAI’s paid plans. However, with OpenAI already working on its o3 model, featuring a “private chain of thought” for more advanced reasoning, the AI landscape is evolving quickly. Whether Microsoft will extend its free AI access beyond o1 remains to be seen.
