Netgear Issues Critical Router Update—Don’t Wait to Install

Netgear Routers & Wi-Fi 6 Access Points Need Urgent Updates—Here’s Why

If you own a Netgear Nighthawk router or Wi-Fi 6 access point, now is the time to check your firmware version and update if needed. Two critical security vulnerabilities have been discovered, prompting Netgear to release urgent fixes that should be applied immediately.

As reported by Bleeping Computer, these vulnerabilities affect three popular Nighthawk gaming routers and three Wi-Fi 6 access points. The first issue is a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability on the routers, which could allow hackers to run malicious code remotely. The second flaw, found in the Wi-Fi 6 access points, is an authentication bypass vulnerability, enabling attackers to access the device without needing a password. Both of these vulnerabilities pose serious security risks if left unpatched.

Affected Devices and Their Required Updates

If you have any of the following devices, you need to update your firmware immediately:

    Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers:

    • XR1000 → Firmware 1.0.0.74
    • XR1000v2 → Firmware 1.1.0.22
    • XR500 → Firmware 2.3.2.134

    Wi-Fi 6 Access Points:

    • WAX206 → Firmware 1.0.5.3
    • WAX220 → Firmware 1.0.3.5
    • WAX214v2 → Firmware 1.0.2.5

Netgear officially released security advisories on February 1st, emphasizing the importance of these updates.

How to Update Your Netgear Device

Netgear provides two ways to apply the update:

Option 1: Use the Netgear App (Easiest Method)

    • If you own a Nighthawk router, update it through the Netgear Nighthawk app.
    • If you have a Wi-Fi 6 access point, check if the Netgear Insight app supports your model.

Option 2: Manually Download and Install the Firmware (For unsupported models)

    1. Visit the Netgear Nighthawk page.
    2. Enter your router or access point’s model number in the search box.
    3. Select your model from the dropdown list.
    4. Click Downloads, then find the latest firmware update under Current Versions.
    5. Download the firmware file and follow the installation steps in your device’s user manual or firmware release notes.

    Why This Matters

Routers and access points are often left unchecked for years, making them prime targets for cybercriminals. If an attacker exploits these vulnerabilities, they could take control of your router or access point, leading to serious security breaches. By keeping your firmware up to date, you ensure that your network remains protected against emerging cyber threats.

If your device hasn’t already updated automatically, take a few minutes today to apply these critical fixes—your network security depends on it.
