“Max” Is Now HBO Max Again

HBO Max has officially reclaimed its name.

This morning, users noticed their streaming app had reverted from “Max” back to the familiar “HBO Max,” putting an end to the rebranding effort that launched three years ago after the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement even included the nostalgic tagline: “It’s good to be Home,” along with the restored HBO Max logo.

The initial rebrand was meant to turn HBO Max into a more inclusive platform—just “Max”—offering everything from HBO’s adult dramas to Discovery’s family-friendly reality shows. But the mix never felt natural. Audiences and executives alike struggled with the clash between shows like True Detective and Property Brothers, while debates over branding for new projects like the Harry Potter series only added to the confusion.

Many subscribers never fully embraced the “Max” identity, continuing to call the service HBO Max regardless. Recognizing this, Warner Bros. Discovery reversed course earlier this year.

While the name change is the most visible difference, the catalog remains much the same—though a handful of children’s shows were dropped in late 2024. The company is also planning to spin off Discovery’s content in the near future, a move that could see those titles removed from HBO Max after the breakup is finalized next year.

For now, though, it’s back to HBO Max as we know it—familiar, focused, and “home” once more.
