Take Control: DuckDuckGo Now Blocks AI-Generated Images

In an age where AI-generated content is proliferating across the web, DuckDuckGo is taking a user-first approach by giving people the option to filter out synthetic images from their searches. The privacy-focused search engine has introduced a new feature within its “Images” tab that enables users to exclude AI-generated images from appearing in their results.

The setting, simply labeled “AI images,” allows for toggling between showing or hiding such content. This change comes after users raised concerns that AI-generated images—often created through tools like Midjourney or DALL·E—were becoming too common in search results, making it harder to locate real photographs or traditionally created graphics.

DuckDuckGo’s solution uses community-driven block lists, including those from uBlock Origin and the Huge AI Blocklist. These lists identify known domains and image sources associated with AI-generated visuals. While helpful, the company acknowledges that these filters are not 100% foolproof—new AI image sources are constantly emerging, and some may still bypass the block lists.

Still, this new feature is a meaningful step toward putting more control back into the hands of users. DuckDuckGo has long championed digital autonomy and privacy, and this filter reflects its broader philosophy: users should decide how much AI content they engage with, not the algorithm. It’s a clear response to increasing demand for transparency and personalization in the search experience.

Looking ahead, DuckDuckGo says additional search filters are on the way, though it hasn’t shared specific details. With the growing presence of AI across all forms of digital content, this move could mark the beginning of a new era in search customization—especially for users who value authenticity and clarity over novelty.
