Anthropic has expanded the capabilities of the free version of its Claude chatbot, bringing several features that were previously locked behind paid tiers to all users. The update allows free users to create and edit files such as Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs directly within the chatbot interface.
Another key addition is support for Connectors, which let users link Claude to external services including Canva, Slack, Notion, Zapier, and PayPal. These integrations enable the chatbot to access and interact with tools many people already use for work and productivity.
Anthropic is also opening up its Skills feature to free users. This allows people to teach Claude recurring tasks and workflows using predefined instructions, effectively turning the chatbot into a customizable assistant for repetitive work.
The upgrade includes longer conversations, more interactive responses, and improvements to voice and image search capabilities. Together, these changes aim to make the free version of Claude more competitive in a crowded AI assistant market.
The timing is notable. The update arrives as AI companies experiment with different monetization strategies. While some rivals have introduced advertising into their free chatbot tiers, Anthropic has publicly committed to keeping Claude free of ads. By expanding features without adding advertising, the company appears to be positioning Claude as a productivity-focused alternative for users who want advanced tools without paid subscriptions or sponsored content.
