Proton Mail Adds Gmail Integration to Ease Migration From Google
Proton has introduced a new feature that allows users to access and manage their Gmail messages directly from within Proton Mail, making it easier for users to transition away from Google’s email ecosystem without immediately abandoning their existing address.
The move reflects Proton’s ongoing strategy of positioning itself as a privacy-focused alternative to mainstream cloud services.
Users Can Read and Send Gmail Messages Inside Proton Mail
The new integration allows Proton Mail users to connect their existing Gmail accounts and view recent Gmail messages directly through Proton’s interface.
Once connected, new incoming emails are automatically synchronized, allowing users to manage both services from a single inbox.
Users can also send emails through their Gmail accounts without leaving Proton Mail, reducing the need to switch between platforms during the migration process.
Designed to Encourage Gradual Departure From Gmail
Proton says the feature is intended for users who want to move toward a privacy-focused email provider but face practical challenges when changing email addresses.
Many people have years of accounts, subscriptions, contacts and online services linked to Gmail, making a complete transition difficult to perform all at once.
By allowing Gmail access inside Proton Mail, users can continue receiving messages at their existing address while gradually updating important services and contacts to a Proton-based email account.
The company hopes the approach will reduce one of the biggest barriers preventing users from switching providers.
Privacy Benefits Come With Important Limitations
Proton argues that managing Gmail through Proton Mail offers certain privacy advantages.
According to the company, Proton does not scan emails for targeted advertising, user profiling or AI model training purposes.
However, Proton also acknowledges a significant limitation: emails delivered to a Gmail address still pass through Google’s infrastructure.
As a result, Google can continue accessing and analyzing communications sent directly to a Gmail account, regardless of which email application is ultimately used to read them.
The integration therefore improves convenience and provides a migration path, but it does not immediately eliminate Google’s visibility into Gmail communications.
Part of a Broader Privacy Ecosystem Strategy
The Gmail integration represents another step in Proton’s effort to expand beyond encrypted email into a broader ecosystem of privacy-focused services.
Alongside Proton Mail, the company now offers products including Proton Drive, Proton VPN and Proton Pass.
