Apple’s AI: Functional Yet Uninspired Compared to Windows Copilot

Apple’s new AI features in the iPhone 16 illustrate a fundamentally pragmatic approach, contrasting sharply with the ambitious and forward-thinking AI integration seen in Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs. While Microsoft’s Copilot+ heralds a new age of computing with its advanced AI capabilities and a dedicated keyboard button for AI functions, Apple’s AI offerings in the iPhone 16 are markedly more subdued and focused on practical applications.

Apple, known for its appeal to creative professionals, had the potential to leverage AI in innovative ways similar to Google’s Pixel, which uses AI to create imaginative images of non-existent objects. Instead, Apple opted for a more conservative implementation. The iPhone 16’s AI features are designed to enhance productivity rather than push creative boundaries. For example, Siri has been upgraded with a new AI foundation that improves its ability to understand and participate in complex conversations. AI now assists in organizing photos into albums of your favorite people, provides contextual information about objects you are viewing, and generates summaries of your meetings. Notably, Apple has introduced a “semantic index” feature that can quickly surface information you may have forgotten, providing a unique spin on the controversial Windows Recall function.

Microsoft’s approach to AI, in contrast, includes features like generative art within its Photos and Paint applications, showcasing a more creative use of AI technology. Apple’s AI enhancements, such as real-time camera filter previews and the creation of custom “genmojis,” appear less groundbreaking. Features like searching for specific photos or combining them into a “movie” based on user descriptions feel like incremental upgrades rather than revolutionary innovations.

Apple’s conservative AI strategy may be a deliberate decision to avoid disrupting its established user base of creatives. By focusing on AI as a tool for enhancing existing functionalities, Apple maintains its commitment to practical improvements without alienating its traditional customers. This cautious approach allows Apple to highlight the capabilities of its A18 silicon while leaving more radical AI developments to competitors like Microsoft and Google. In this landscape, Apple’s AI strategy emphasizes reliability and incremental advancement over bold experimentation.
