Java Drops to Fourth Place in Tiobe Programming Language Popularity Index

In a significant development, C++ has surpassed Java in the latest edition of the Tiobe Programming Community Index, marking the first time since its inception in 2001 that C++ has outranked Java. As of December 2022, C++ holds the third position while Java has slipped to fourth place. This shift underscores C++’s enduring relevance in large system programming, noted Paul Jansen, CEO of Tiobe. He highlighted C++’s performance advantages, emphasizing its position as the fastest language for such applications.

Despite Java’s drop in the Tiobe index, Jansen reassured that Java’s overall popularity remains robust. In 2022, Java experienced a modest increase in popularity (up by 1.70%), albeit not matching the growth rates of the top three languages. This indicates a steady demand and widespread usage of Java across various sectors, underscoring its stability and broad adoption in enterprise and web application development.

The Tiobe index methodology ranks programming languages based on search engine queries from Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other sources. Factors considered include the number of engineers globally, courses offered, and third-party vendors supporting each language. This comprehensive approach provides insights into the relative popularity and usage trends of programming languages within the developer community.

The top 10 languages in the Tiobe index include Python leading with a rating of 16.66%, followed closely by C at 16.56%, and C++ at 11.94%. Java, now in fourth place, holds a rating of 11.82%, followed by C# at 4.92%, and Visual Basic at 3.94%. JavaScript, SQL, Assembly, and PHP round out the top 10 with varying degrees of popularity, reflecting the diverse needs and preferences of developers worldwide.

In contrast to the Tiobe index, Java maintains its lead over C++ in the Pypl Popularity of Programming Language Index. This alternative index ranks languages based on Google search trends for language tutorials, indicating Java’s strong educational and learning appeal. As of December 2022, Python tops the Pypl index with a commanding 28.34% share, followed by Java at 16.93%. JavaScript, C#, C/C++, PHP, R, TypeScript, Swift, and Objective-C complete the top 10, illustrating the dynamic landscape of programming languages and their evolving roles in industry and academia.

Overall, while C++ surpassing Java in the Tiobe index marks a noteworthy milestone, Java continues to exhibit resilience and significant usage across diverse domains. The contrasting perspectives from different indices underscore the multifaceted nature of language popularity, influenced by factors ranging from performance capabilities to educational resources and industry demand
