Public Claude Chats Briefly Appeared in Google Search, Raising Privacy Concerns

Some publicly shared conversations from Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude recently appeared in Google Search results, exposing sensitive discussions that users may not have expected to become discoverable through search engines. Although the indexed pages have since been removed, the incident highlights the privacy risks associated with sharing AI conversations via public links.

Anthropic says the issue affected only chats that users had intentionally shared using Claude’s public sharing feature.

Only Publicly Shared Conversations Were Affected

The incident did not expose private Claude conversations.

According to Anthropic, only chats and artifacts that users had explicitly shared through public URLs were eligible to appear in search results.

Within Claude, users can generate a public link by selecting the Share option and choosing “Create public link.” Anyone with that URL can view the full conversation or shared artifact.

How the Conversations Became Searchable

Anthropic stated that it does not provide chat directories or XML sitemaps to search engines.

The company told TechCrunch that publicly shared links become discoverable only if users distribute them elsewhere, such as:

• Social media posts
• Public websites
• Other online platforms

Once shared publicly, those URLs may be crawled or archived by third-party services, potentially allowing search engines like Google to index them.

Sensitive Information Was Exposed

Before the links disappeared from Google Search, thousands of shared Claude conversations reportedly became searchable.

Some indexed conversations contained highly sensitive information, including:

• Cryptocurrency wallet discussions that included private keys
• Legal ethics questions from an attorney
• Personal conversations
• Explicit adult content

The links have since been removed from Google’s search results, suggesting Anthropic has taken additional measures to prevent search engine indexing of shared Claude URLs.

Review Your Shared Claude Links

Users who have previously shared Claude conversations can review and manage them through the application’s privacy settings.

To check existing shared content:

1. Open Settings in Claude.
2. Navigate to Privacy.
3. Select Shared chats or Shared artifacts.
4. Review previously shared items and make them private if desired.

Think Carefully Before Sharing AI Conversations

The incident serves as a reminder that a public link should be treated as genuinely public.

Whether using Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI assistant, users should avoid sharing conversations that contain:

• Passwords or API keys
• Financial information
• Personal identification details
• Confidential business information
• Sensitive legal or medical discussions

As a general rule, if information would be inappropriate to publish on a public webpage or social media post, it should not be shared through a public AI conversation link.

While the affected Claude conversations have been removed from Google Search, the episode underscores how easily publicly shared AI content can become discoverable beyond its intended audience if links are distributed online.
