Anthropic May Now Require ID Verification for Some Claude Users

Anthropic has updated the privacy policy for its AI chatbot Claude, introducing the possibility of identity and age verification for certain users. Under the new policy, which took effect on July 8, the company may ask users to upload a government-issued ID—such as a passport, driver’s license, or national identity card—in specific situations.

Anthropic says the measure will only affect a small number of users and is intended to strengthen account security and prevent misuse.

    When Could Verification Be Required?

According to Anthropic, users may be asked to verify their identity or age for purposes including:

    • Managing user accounts
    • Preventing fraud
    • Investigating misuse or security incidents
    • Enforcing the company’s terms of service

The company has not specified exactly what circumstances will trigger a verification request, suggesting it will be applied selectively rather than universally.

    Persona Will Handle Identity Checks

Identity verification will be conducted through Persona, a U.S.-based identity verification service.

Anthropic says it will retain the results of the verification process—for example, to confirm that a user meets minimum age requirements—rather than repeatedly asking the same user to verify their identity.

    Privacy Concerns Remain

Although Anthropic emphasizes that only a small proportion of users will be affected, the policy change has raised privacy concerns among some Claude users.

Uploading government-issued identification to access AI services has become an increasingly controversial topic, particularly as AI platforms continue expanding their capabilities and user bases.

Part of a Broader Industry Trend

Anthropic is not alone in introducing stronger identity verification measures.

Several major online platforms have faced similar debates in recent months:

    • Discord received criticism after introducing age verification in certain regions.
    • Reddit faced backlash over proposals to use ID verification to combat automated bot accounts.
    • OpenAI previously implemented age verification measures following concerns surrounding AI safety and the protection of minors.

These moves reflect a growing effort across the technology industry to balance user privacy with regulatory compliance, platform safety, and fraud prevention.

    Limited Rollout for Now

For the time being, Anthropic maintains that the vast majority of Claude users will not encounter identity verification requests.

However, the updated policy signals that identity checks are becoming an increasingly common tool among AI providers as governments introduce stricter regulations around age verification, online safety, and responsible AI usage.
