One of the persistent drawbacks of many AI-powered products is their heavy reliance on cloud-based processing, which often requires sending user data to remote servers outside the user’s control. While this isn’t necessarily worse than using a standard online search engine, it still raises ongoing privacy concerns—especially as AI systems become more deeply integrated into everyday devices.
Displace TV aims to address this issue with its upcoming Displace Pro TV 2 by emphasizing local AI processing. According to the company, much of the data generated through user interactions is intended to stay on the television itself, rather than being transmitted to external servers operated by large technology firms. The goal is to reduce exposure to third-party data handling while still offering advanced AI-driven features.
The Pro TV 2 is equipped with dedicated on-device Neural Processing Units (NPUs) and Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), enabling AI tasks to be handled locally. Displace says this hardware allows for secure, on-device processing and is paired with a browser-based OS 2.0 designed to keep sensitive information stored on the TV. Features relying on local AI include pause-to-shop functionality, a personalized video news agent, conversational voice search, and gesture-based controls that let users interact with the TV without a remote.
That approach positions Displace as a privacy-focused alternative in the smart TV market. However, even with local AI, some data exchange is unavoidable. Network-level information such as IP addresses may still be visible, meaning the Pro TV 2 reduces—but does not entirely eliminate—external data exposure.
