Key Areas for Improvement in Angular Highlighted by the  Developer Survey

According to the results from the Angular Developer Survey 2022, developers utilizing Google’s TypeScript-based Angular framework have identified several key areas for enhancement. These include server-side rendering, testing, debugging and profiling, initial load performance, and the component authoring format. The survey gathered insights from over 12,000 developers and was published on May 23 by the Angular development team, reflecting the community’s priorities and needs.

One of the most significant requests from developers is improved server-side rendering. The Angular team noted that a developer preview of hydration was released with Angular 16, enhancing the process of restoring a server-side rendered application on the client side. This new feature aims to streamline user experiences, particularly in applications that rely on rapid content delivery. Additionally, the Angular team is looking into partial hydration and resumability, as well as better integration of Angular Universal with the Command Line Interface (CLI). These efforts indicate a strong focus on optimizing server-side capabilities, making it a top priority for the community.

In the realm of testing, the Angular team is making significant changes by replacing Karma with the Web Test Runner for in-browser testing in the Angular CLI. This switch reflects a growing preference for modern testing frameworks that facilitate smoother testing processes. The team is also introducing support for Jest, a popular testing framework known for its simplicity and powerful features, making it easier for developers to test their applications efficiently. This transition is expected to enhance the overall testing experience for Angular developers.

Debugging and profiling improvements have also been a focal point for the Angular team. The recent updates in Angular 15 introduced improved stack traces, allowing developers to more easily identify and troubleshoot issues within their applications. These enhancements contribute to a more robust debugging environment, which is critical for maintaining high-quality code and ensuring smooth application performance.

When it comes to initial load performance, the Angular team is actively working on developing a more ergonomic component-level code-splitting API. This new feature will allow developers to declaratively annotate parts of the component tree that should be lazily loaded, optimizing the initial load times of applications. Faster load times are essential for improving user experience and engagement, making this enhancement a welcomed addition by the community.

Finally, the component authoring format is undergoing improvements as well. Angular 16 has already introduced required inputs and self-closing tags, streamlining component creation and enhancing code readability. The team is now focusing on input coercion and further improvements in control flow, indicating their commitment to making the component authoring process more intuitive and efficient for developers. As Angular continues to evolve, these enhancements will empower developers to build more sophisticated and user-friendly applications.
