Go and Kotlin Are Also Good Bets for Developers With Just a Few Years of Experience — Not Java

Despite the high demand for software engineering talent that has persisted throughout the global pandemic, landing that first entry-level position remains a challenge for many new graduates and early-career professionals. A significant number of job postings require years of experience, creating a barrier for those just starting out. However, certain skills can improve your chances and open doors to numerous opportunities.

Among the most accessible entry-level roles is that of a React developer. Data analysis from the job site Indeed, conducted in January 2021 by programming instructor Mark Lassof, reveals that React is a particularly advantageous skill for new developers. Over 52% of job listings requiring React skills are open to entry-level candidates. This contrasts sharply with Java, which only offers 14% of entry-level opportunities, and PHP, which stands at 21%.

React, a popular JavaScript library, necessitates familiarity with fundamental front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Mastery of these basics will enable you to leverage React effectively and position yourself as a strong candidate in the job market. The learning curve for React is relatively manageable if you already possess a foundation in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

According to Lassof, “If you’re learning this year, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and then the React library is the way to go. With 29,587 open entry-level jobs, your chances of landing something are quite good, and it’s not a long haul to learn the React library if you already know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.”

Additionally, the job site Hired highlights that for developers with less than a year of experience, languages such as Go, Scala, and Kotlin generate the most interview requests per candidate. While Java is a staple in many enterprise environments, its entry-level job market is less accessible compared to these languages.

In summary, focusing on React along with fundamental web technologies can significantly enhance your prospects for securing an entry-level software development position. Furthermore, exploring languages like Go and Kotlin can also be advantageous as you build your career.
