    Fortran Sees a Revival in Numerical and Scientific Computing

    Fortran, a 67-year-old programming language, maintains a spot in the Tiobe Index’s top 10 for the second consecutive month

    Fortran, a programming language with a history stretching back to 1957, has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity, earning a spot in the top 10 of the Tiobe Index of Programming Language Popularity. This resurgence, which began in April 2024, marks Fortran’s first appearance in the top 10 since April 2002. Despite a slight drop in its rating from 1.47% to 1.24% in May, Fortran’s renewed prominence is a significant achievement for a language of its age.

    The increased interest in Fortran can be largely attributed to its continued dominance in the field of numerical and scientific computing. As technology evolves and computational needs become more complex, Fortran’s specialized capabilities for mathematical and scientific calculations make it an enduring choice. According to Paul Jansen, CEO of Tiobe, Fortran’s appeal lies in its unique advantages over other languages used for similar purposes.

    Jansen highlights that despite the growing competition, Fortran remains a strong contender. While Python is widely used, it is often criticized for its slower execution speeds in computational tasks. MATLAB, another popular tool for numerical computing, comes with high licensing costs, making it less accessible for many users. C/C++ are known for their speed but lack native support for mathematical computations. R is often too slow for intensive tasks, and although Julia is an emerging language with potential, it is still considered immature compared to Fortran’s long-standing stability and performance.

     

     

    Fortran’s modern versions have kept pace with evolving computational needs, incorporating features that maintain its relevance in today’s tech landscape. Its efficiency and robust support for complex mathematical operations make it a preferred choice in fields requiring high-performance computing, such as engineering simulations and scientific research.

    The Tiobe Programming Community Index, which tracks the popularity of programming languages based on factors like the number of skilled engineers, online courses, and third-party vendors, reflects these trends. The index aggregates data from multiple sources including Google, Bing, and Wikipedia, providing a comprehensive view of language usage trends.

    In summary, Fortran’s return to the top 10 of the Tiobe Index underscores its enduring value in numerical and scientific computing. As industries continue to rely on high-performance computing, Fortran’s combination of speed, native support for mathematical computations, and a mature, cost-effective solution ensures its place among the most respected programming languages.
