Google adds Gemini AI chat to YouTube on smart TVs

YouTube is preparing to test a new AI-powered feature on smart TVs that could change how viewers interact with content. According to reports highlighted by Android Authority, the upcoming “Ask” feature will use Gemini to let users query and control videos directly through voice prompts and on-screen suggestions.

The feature will appear as an “Ask” button within the YouTube TV interface. Once activated, viewers can select from prewritten questions or use their TV remote’s microphone to ask custom questions. The tool is designed to help users jump to specific timestamps, clarify what’s happening in a scene, or gather additional information about what they’re watching.

While Gemini-powered interactions are already available on YouTube’s mobile and web platforms, this marks the first major push toward integrating the AI assistant into large-screen smart TV environments. The test will reportedly run across multiple platforms, including Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, as well as gaming consoles and dedicated streaming devices.

Google is initially rolling out the feature to a limited group of users. Broader availability will likely depend on user feedback and performance during the testing phase.

If successful, the Gemini-powered “Ask” feature could further blur the line between passive viewing and interactive AI assistance, turning televisions into more conversational entertainment hubs.
