The world of smart home tech has seen a string of leaks lately, and Google has unintentionally joined the parade. While the company had previously teased a new Gemini smart speaker during its Pixel event, recent activity in the Google Home app has revealed something more concrete: images of three upcoming Nest devices. Android Authority spotted the images before they were quickly removed, providing an early, if incomplete, glimpse at Google’s next-generation camera hardware.
The leaked visuals indicate the release of a second-generation Nest Cam Outdoor, a third-generation Nest Cam Indoor, and a third-generation Nest Doorbell, all wired models. Though the images show designs similar to current products, the leak also reveals internal codenames: “lionesa” for the Outdoor cam, “ustica” for the Indoor cam, and “rhodes” for the Doorbell. These codenames hint at distinct upgrades and refinements in hardware or functionality, even if the external appearance remains familiar.
Previous reporting from Android Headlines has already suggested some of the key improvements. The cameras are expected to feature 2K resolution, improved from the prior 1080p models, alongside new capabilities such as zoom-and-crop for live feeds, three-hour video previews, and one hour of local storage. Google is also expanding the color options, allowing users to better match devices to their home environment. While the leaked images don’t show anything drastically new, they confirm that Google is actively developing these devices for imminent release.
The timing of these leaks is notable. Google has been quiet on Nest updates for four years, and the last new Home speaker launched even earlier. The October 1 update for Google Home, which coincides with the Gemini smart speaker rollout, will likely clarify the full specifications and availability of these long-awaited products. The leaks, while accidental, make it clear that Google has not abandoned its smart home ambitions; instead, it is preparing a significant refresh that could reinvigorate its hardware lineup for years to come.
