Google launches new Gemini Flash models as Gemini Pro remains unchanged

Google Unveils New Gemini Flash Models, but the Long-Awaited Gemini Pro Upgrade Is Still Missing

Google has expanded its Gemini AI lineup with three new Flash models focused on speed, efficiency, and specialized workloads. While the latest releases strengthen Google’s lightweight AI offerings, they also draw attention to one notable omission: a new Gemini Pro model.

With competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic rapidly advancing their flagship AI models, Google’s next-generation Pro model has yet to arrive despite months of anticipation.

    Three New Gemini Flash Models

    Google’s latest release includes:

    • Gemini 3.6 Flash, a general-purpose model designed for coding, knowledge work, and multimodal tasks.
    • Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, optimized for low-latency workloads such as AI agents and fast search.
    • Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, a cybersecurity-focused model that will initially be available only to government organizations and selected trusted partners.

The restricted rollout of Flash Cyber mirrors recent launches from OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which limited access to their most advanced cybersecurity models because of their powerful offensive and defensive capabilities.

Gemini Pro Hasn’t Been Updated Since February

Despite the arrival of new Flash models, Google’s flagship Gemini 3.1 Pro remains unchanged since its release in February 2026.

In the rapidly evolving AI industry, that makes it one of the oldest frontier models currently available.

Meanwhile, rival companies have continued releasing major upgrades, including:

    • OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol
    • Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5
    • Anthropic’s Mythos 5
    • Earlier releases such as GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8

The growing gap has led many users to question when Google’s next flagship model will finally debut.

Google Says Gemini 3.5 Pro Is Coming

Google has confirmed that Gemini 3.5 Pro is still on the way, stating in a recent press release that the model will be released “soon.”

Many expected the upgrade to be unveiled during Google I/O in May, but the event passed without an announcement.

Speculation increased after reports suggested the model remained in development following underwhelming internal testing results, although Google has not officially commented on those claims.

Built for Different Types of AI Work

The new Flash models are aimed at users who prioritize speed and efficiency.

    According to Google:

    • Gemini 3.6 Flash is intended for coding, document analysis, chart interpretation, and general productivity tasks.
    • Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite focuses on fast responses for agentic search and other latency-sensitive workloads.

While these lightweight models are well suited for summarizing documents, answering everyday questions, and routine productivity tasks, flagship “Pro” models generally excel at more demanding workloads such as complex software development, large spreadsheet analysis, and extended reasoning.

    Pressure Continues to Build

Google’s expanded Flash lineup demonstrates continued progress in efficient AI models, but it also highlights the growing demand for a modern replacement to Gemini 3.1 Pro.

With OpenAI and Anthropic continuing to push their flagship models forward, many users are waiting to see whether Gemini 3.5 Pro can restore Google’s position at the top end of the AI market. For now, however, Google has offered only one indication: the next Pro model is coming “soon.”
