JetBrains IDEs Integrate with Gitpod for Cloud-Powered Development

JetBrains IDE users can now take advantage of cloud-based development through an exciting new integration with Gitpod. This collaboration, announced on April 27, allows developers to seamlessly access their source code hosted in temporary development environments directly from JetBrains IDEs running in the cloud. The integration leverages the capabilities of Gitpod’s platform alongside JetBrains Gateway, a remote development tool currently in beta, making it easier than ever for developers to work on their projects from virtually anywhere.

Gitpod is an open-source platform designed to automate the provisioning and orchestration of developer environments. It allows developers to spin up cloud-based development environments that are ephemeral in nature, meaning they can be created and destroyed on demand. This reduces the need for local setup and maintenance, providing a fast, scalable way to work on code in the cloud. The integration with JetBrains IDEs brings these cloud environments directly into the familiar JetBrains interface, streamlining the developer experience.

The process of connecting Gitpod with JetBrains IDEs is facilitated by JetBrains Gateway, a standalone application that makes remote development possible. With JetBrains Gateway, developers can connect to remote servers via SSH, set up the necessary back-end services (including the IDE), and open projects hosted on remote machines. This setup allows the development environment to feel like it’s running locally, despite the code being executed in the cloud. JetBrains Gateway acts as a bridge, enabling the JetBrains Client to connect to the back-end IDE service and present the project to the developer’s local machine.

By integrating Gitpod with JetBrains IDEs, developers can leverage the power of cloud-based environments while maintaining the rich features and flexibility of JetBrains tools. This integration not only facilitates collaboration but also improves workflows by eliminating the need for local infrastructure management. As cloud development continues to grow in popularity, this partnership between Gitpod and JetBrains provides a forward-thinking solution that enhances productivity and flexibility for developers working in distributed environments
