July Windows 10 Update Triggers Blue Screen Reboot Loops

On Patch Day (July 9, 2024), Microsoft rolled out KB5040427, a crucial cumulative update for Windows 10 that addresses several security vulnerabilities. We strongly recommend installing it if you haven’t done so already.

However, after installing this cumulative update, many users are experiencing significant issues, as reported by Windows Report. Computers are stuck in endless blue screen and reboot cycles. One user described their experience:

Windows 10 Update 2024-07 Cumulative Update Version 22H2 for x64-based systems (KB5040427) causes frequent laptop reboots. It also resets the laptop to a clean blue screen, it looks like it is factory reset. Every time the laptop restarts, it asks you to log into a drive. I have tried to troubleshoot the Windows update but no error is displayed. I have paused the Windows update for 7 days.

Other users have reported similar issues, including constant reboots and freezes. These problems are also being discussed on Reddit.

Interestingly, patch KB5040442 is causing similar problems for Windows 11 users. Microsoft is currently investigating these issues.

    The affected operating systems
    Windows 11 version 23H2, Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 21H2
    Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 10 version 21H2
Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008.

    How to resolve the issue
According to Microsoft, the issues with KB5040427 are primarily occurring on devices with BitLocker encryption enabled.

Affected users should enter their recovery key. Once the recovery key is entered, Windows should boot into the BitLocker recovery screen and function properly again.

To find your recovery key, log into the BitLocker recovery screen portal with your Microsoft account. (Microsoft provides detailed instructions on locating your BitLocker recovery key on their support page.)

    KB5040525 is also causing problems
Another recent update, KB5040525, which is currently an optional preview for Windows 10 22H2, is causing issues such as memory problems and application crashes after installation.

Since this update is not mandatory and isn’t automatically installed by Windows, it’s best to avoid installing it manually.
