JetBrains’ Kotlin language, recognized as a strong competitor to Java and endorsed by Google for Android mobile development, continues to assert its presence on the Tiobe Index of language popularity. In the latest rankings for November 2023, Kotlin has ascended to the 15th spot, showcasing its growing significance within the programming community.

In September, Kotlin broke into the top 20 on the Tiobe Index with a respectable rating of 0.9%. The language has now further elevated its standing, achieving a noteworthy rating of 1.15% this month, up from its 18th position last month. This consistent progress underscores Kotlin’s increasing acceptance and influence in the dynamic field of programming languages.

    Tiobe’s Recognition of Kotlin’s Advantages

Tiobe, a prominent software quality services company, attributes Kotlin’s rise to several factors. Notably, its interoperability with Java and its unmatched accommodations for Android development contribute to its popularity. Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen emphasizes that Kotlin aligns with the modern programming culture, characterized by expressive languages with robust type systems designed to avoid null pointer exceptions.

    Outlook for Kotlin’s Future Positioning

Expressing confidence in Kotlin’s trajectory, Jansen suggests that the language has the potential to secure a position in the top 10 on the Tiobe Index. However, the prospect of reaching a top-four slot remains uncertain and will depend on continued observations of Kotlin’s growth and adoption within the programming community.

Comparing Tiobe and Pypl Index Rankings

While Tiobe’s methodology assesses the number of skilled engineers, courses, and third-party vendors worldwide using data from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, the Pypl Popularity of Programming Languages index takes a different approach. In Pypl’s ranking for November 2023, Kotlin holds the 13th position with a 1.76% share, showcasing a slight dip year-over-year.

In summary, Kotlin’s upward trajectory on the Tiobe Index reflects its growing popularity and influence in the programming landscape, particularly in the realm of Android development. As it continues to gain momentum, Kotlin remains a language to watch for its potential impact on future programming trends and industry preferences.
