LG’s latest OLED gaming display pushes refresh rates to 720Hz

If you thought gaming monitors couldn’t get any faster, LG is here to prove otherwise — with a new 27-inch OLED display capable of reaching a mind-blowing 720Hz refresh rate. That kind of speed can be a game-changer for competitive gamers chasing every millisecond of advantage. But the trade-off is clear: hitting 720Hz requires dropping the resolution to 1080p instead of the panel’s native 2560×1440.

Still, at its native QHD resolution, this OLED monitor manages an impressive 540Hz, which outpaces the current market standard for 27-inch OLED gaming panels by a significant margin. LG’s new Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR) technology enables this flexible scaling between resolution and refresh rate, letting gamers choose a visual fidelity vs. speed balance tailored to their needs. This dynamic switching isn’t unprecedented — last year LG debuted a monitor that switched between 4K/240Hz and 1080p/480Hz modes, showing their commitment to pushing display tech boundaries.

But LG’s innovations don’t stop at gaming monitors. The company also unveiled a 45-inch 5K2K panel with a whopping 5120×2160 resolution at the OLED Heritage exhibition in Seoul. This panel essentially upsizes the ultrawide experience, moving far beyond the typical 34-inch 3440×1440 format into a stunningly crisp, immersive territory that could be ideal for creative professionals or immersive productivity setups.

Additionally, LG’s new fourth-generation 83-inch OLED TV panel packs a brightness punch of up to 4,000 nits — a major leap forward for OLED technology, which traditionally struggles with peak brightness compared to LCD alternatives. This enhancement means deeper contrasts and more vibrant HDR content for viewers, pushing OLED TVs closer to perfection in both color and luminance.

These next-gen OLED panels are slated to hit the market in 2026, making their way into LG’s own products and those of partner companies who rely on LG’s cutting-edge display tech. Many industry watchers are eagerly awaiting CES in January, where some of these breakthrough panels could be previewed, signaling a new era of ultra-fast, ultra-high-res, and ultra-bright OLED screens for gamers, creatives, and home theater enthusiasts alike.
