MariaDB Reclaims SkySQL, Restoring Its DBaaS Offering
MariaDB has made a surprising move by reacquiring SkySQL, the cloud-based database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform it spun off in late 2023. The original spin-off had transferred responsibility for SkySQL to a team composed largely of former MariaDB employees who had built and supported the product. With this acquisition, MariaDB brings the platform back under its direct control, signaling a renewed focus on its cloud offerings and strategic consolidation.
The company stated that the move will allow it to better meet customer and market expectations by providing more flexible deployment options. By reintegrating SkySQL, MariaDB Cloud will offer a mix of self-managed and fully managed services, forming a central part of the company’s product portfolio. This approach aims to give customers hybrid deployment choices without forcing them into hyperscaler ecosystems, addressing a growing demand for flexibility in cloud database solutions.
Industry analysts see the reacquisition as a stabilizing move rather than a disruptive innovation. Michael Ni, VP and principal analyst at Constellation Research, noted that the acquisition, combined with added vectorDB support, is designed to reassure customers that MariaDB can deliver a coherent cloud strategy. Rather than introducing radically new features, the focus appears to be on consolidating existing capabilities and ensuring consistent service and support for enterprise clients.
Devin Pratt, research director for data management at IDC, highlighted that MariaDB Cloud has evolved into a fully managed, streamlined service with agentic AI considerations built into its design. This positions the company to better support modern AI-driven workloads while maintaining open-source flexibility. The reacquisition of SkySQL marks a clear step toward unifying MariaDB’s cloud strategy and stabilizing its long-term roadmap, addressing past missteps while preparing the platform for future growth.
