Microsoft Fixes Critical Defender Zero-Day Exploited Through RoguePlanet Vulnerability

Microsoft has released a security update to address RoguePlanet, a critical zero-day vulnerability affecting Microsoft Defender’s Malware Protection Engine. Tracked as CVE-2026-50656, the flaw could allow attackers to gain complete control over a vulnerable Windows system.

The fix is being distributed automatically through Windows Update as part of an updated version of Microsoft’s Malware Protection Engine.

What Is RoguePlanet?

RoguePlanet was disclosed about a month ago by the anonymous security researcher Nightmare Eclipse, who has become well known for uncovering several high-profile Windows security vulnerabilities.

According to Microsoft’s advisory, the flaw resides in the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine—the core component responsible for scanning files and detecting malware across Microsoft Defender and related security products.

If successfully exploited, the vulnerability could enable attackers to obtain full access to an affected computer.

The company stated:
