Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Microsoft really doesn’t want you to wander off to the competition. This time, it’s not just about search — it’s about AI. And just like a clingy friend at a party, Microsoft keeps finding ways to stand between you and anyone else you might want to talk to.
Search for “Claude” — Anthropic’s AI chatbot — using Bing in Microsoft Edge and you’ll still get the link you asked for. But you’ll also get a big banner announcing “Your Copilot is here”, plus its own search box, as if Copilot just popped up to say, “Hey, don’t forget about me!” According to Windows Latest, this isn’t an Edge thing — Bing.com itself is injecting the reminder.
This “please don’t leave” energy seems to be paying off. Microsoft’s latest quarterly results showed a 21 percent jump in search and news ad revenue compared to last year, and while the company doesn’t break down where it came from, you can bet that Copilot prompts, search ads, and in-Windows nudges all play a role.
Meanwhile, Copilot has quietly slipped into second place in AI chatbot traffic, right behind ChatGPT. Some of that might be down to quirks in measurement, but it’s hard to ignore the way Microsoft has woven Copilot into Windows, Office, and Bing — all while throwing up gentle reminders to stay put. Whether that’s genuine persuasion or just a clever bit of digital gatekeeping is up for debate, but one thing’s clear: Microsoft isn’t shy about making sure you know Copilot is right there, ready to chat.
