Microsoft has officially released the first build of Windows 11 26H1, but most users won’t need to take any action. Insider Preview Build 28000 is now available on the Canary Channel, the most experimental tier of Windows Insider testing, updating version information in Settings > System > About and winver to Windows 11, version 26H1.
According to Microsoft, this build is not a standard feature update. It only contains platform improvements to support specific new processors. “There is no action required from customers,” the announcement emphasized, while Windows 11 25H2 continues to serve as the primary branch for introducing new features on an annual update schedule.
Reports suggest 26H1 is optimized for the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite silicon, with previous Snapdragon X Elite hardware used as a development test bed. Microsoft plans to extend support to other Copilot+ chips, including Intel Core Ultra 200 and AMD Ryzen AI 300 processors, before a full consumer rollout.
Enthusiasts looking to test new Windows features are advised to stay on 25H2, as Canary Channel builds are highly experimental. Microsoft notes that these builds may contain features that never reach public release, may be modified, or could be removed entirely. The 26H1 channel essentially serves as a sandbox for testing platform changes and gathering early feedback.
