New Wikipedia policy cracks down on sloppy AI-written content

As generative AI systems continue to churn out vast amounts of text across the internet, their influence has started to seep into platforms that depend heavily on human contribution and editorial review—none more so than Wikipedia. Known for its collaborative editing process and commitment to factual accuracy, Wikipedia is now confronting a rising wave of AI-generated content that threatens to erode its foundational principles. From nonsensical ebooks to auto-written YouTube narrations, the internet is being flooded with robotic prose, and Wikipedia has had to act quickly to defend the quality of its articles from similar incursions.

To combat this growing threat, Wikipedia has rolled out a new policy that empowers administrators to act more swiftly against suspicious content. The site already had a “speedy deletion” option for obviously problematic entries like spam and advertisements, but this new expansion allows editors to apply the same process to articles that show unmistakable signs of having been generated by large language models (LLMs). Examples include introductory phrases like “Here is your Wikipedia article on…” or the presence of entirely fictitious sources and citations—classic hallmarks of AI-generated text. Such content can now be flagged and deleted without the traditional waiting period that would normally involve community debate and consensus.

In a recent interview with 404 Media, veteran Wikimedia editor Ilyas Lebleu explained that while most deletions still undergo the regular week-long review process, the volume of poor-quality AI content has made quicker action necessary. According to Lebleu, this updated policy serves as an emergency measure to deal with the most egregiously flawed submissions—essentially buying time for more comprehensive, long-term solutions to be developed. The community remains aware, however, that this is merely a stopgap, and that automated content will continue to pose a problem unless more robust systems are introduced.

This isn’t the first time Wikipedia has resisted automation in favor of human judgment. Earlier this year, the community decisively rejected proposals to introduce AI-generated article summaries, citing concerns over accountability, factual integrity, and the fundamental open-editing ethos of the platform. Wikipedia’s strength lies in its transparency, its edit history, and its commitment to user-driven correction. As editor Bawolff succinctly put it, “Wikipedia’s brand is reliability, traceability of changes, and ‘anyone can fix it.’ AI is the opposite of these things.” For now, Wikipedia remains committed to preserving its human foundation in the face of machine-made shortcuts that threaten to dilute its credibility.
