Python Widens Gap Ahead of C in March 2024 Tiobe Index

In the latest March 2024 edition of Tiobe’s Programming Community Index, Python has achieved its largest lead to date over the second-place C language, surpassing it by nearly 4.5 percentage points. This milestone underscores Python’s sustained popularity and widespread adoption across diverse programming domains.

Tiobe’s index, published recently, reflects Python’s ascendancy as it continues to dominate a field once ruled by languages like C and Java. Python first claimed the top spot in October 2021 and has since maintained a strong position, buoyed by its versatility in applications ranging from web development and data analysis to artificial intelligence and scientific computing.

The March 2024 index also highlighted notable movements, including Scratch’s re-entry into the top 10 and Rust’s rise to the 17th position from 19th a year ago. These shifts underscore evolving trends in language preferences and usage patterns among developers worldwide.

Tiobe calculates language popularity based on metrics such as the number of skilled engineers, educational courses, and third-party support available across platforms like Google, Amazon, Wikipedia, Bing, and others. This comprehensive approach provides a holistic view of each language’s ecosystem and its relevance in contemporary software development landscapes.

Looking ahead, Python’s robust growth trajectory in Tiobe’s index reflects its ongoing appeal and the community’s confidence in its capabilities. As Python continues to evolve with advancements like efforts to remove the Global Interpreter Lock (GIL) to enhance concurrency, its dominance in the programming language landscape seems poised to endure.

Python has its largest lead ever in Tiobe’s monthly index of programming language popularity, having jumped ahead of second-place C language by nearly 4.5 percentage points.

Published yesterday, the Tiobe Programming Community Index of language popularity for March 2024 saw Python once again leading the index that C and Java once dominated. Python first topped the Tiobe index in October 2021. Elsewhere in the index, Scratch re-entered the top 10 and Rust climbed to 17th. Rust was 19th one year ago.
