    Raspberry Pi 5 Introduces First-Ever 16GB Model

Raspberry Pi 5 Upgraded to 16GB RAM: A Game-Changer for Budget Computing

If you’ve ever wondered how much RAM is enough, the answer can vary greatly depending on your needs. For many, a Raspberry Pi with its traditionally modest memory is all they need for lightweight tasks. But the introduction of the 16GB version of the Raspberry Pi 5 is set to redefine what’s possible for the mini-computer.

At $120, the 16GB model is the most expensive version of the Pi yet, significantly more than the base 2GB and 8GB versions which are priced at $60 and $80, respectively. However, for the increased price, you’re getting an upgrade that’s surprisingly reasonable when you consider the cost of the upgraded DDR4 memory. With $20 per 4GB of memory, this price jump makes sense for those looking for more power on a budget.

Why opt for a Raspberry Pi with 16GB of RAM? According to Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton, the added memory is specifically designed for users who want to run heavy operating systems like Ubuntu, or applications that demand more resources, such as computational fluid dynamics or large AI models. This additional memory also makes it ideal for running Windows 11 on the Pi, as Upton suggests that 16GB is likely the minimum for the latest version of the operating system.

The 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 is certainly an impressive leap, bringing a significant performance boost. However, it also brings the Pi into competition with mini PCs, which generally include storage and an OS out of the box, something the Pi lacks. Nevertheless, for anyone looking to build a budget-friendly Windows PC in a compact form, this new version of the Raspberry Pi is an exciting option.
