RTX 5090 listings hit $7,500 in alarming early pricing

High-end graphics card prices are reaching unprecedented levels, with one listing for the Asus ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090 spotted at a staggering $7,499.

While that specific listing comes from a third-party seller, it highlights a broader trend: most Nvidia RTX 5090 cards are now selling in the $3,800 to $4,000 range—roughly double what many expected at launch.

Just a year ago, prices around $2,400 for RTX 50-series GPUs were considered excessive. Since then, the market has escalated dramatically, with data from PCPartPicker showing average RTX 5090 prices climbing from around $2,000 in early 2025 to roughly $4,000 today.

    Prices rising across the board

The surge isn’t limited to the flagship model. Mid-range GPUs are also becoming more expensive:

    • RTX 5080 models hover around $1,500
    • RTX 5070 models start near $650, but jump to $1,100 for higher VRAM versions

Meanwhile, alternatives from AMD remain more affordable but continue to struggle with mainstream adoption among gamers.

    What’s driving the spike?

Several factors are contributing to the rising costs, including ongoing component shortages—especially memory—fueled in part by demand from AI infrastructure. These shortages are pushing up prices not just for GPUs, but for entire systems.

As a result, discrete graphics cards are becoming the most expensive component in many PCs, reshaping buying decisions for both desktops and laptops.

    How buyers are adapting

With standalone GPU prices soaring, some consumers are turning to alternatives:

    • Prebuilt PCs, which bundle components together and can offer better overall value
    • Hardware bundles, where retailers offset costs across multiple items
    • Lower-tier GPUs, such as RTX 5060-class systems, to stay within budget

However, analysts warn that even these options may not remain affordable if supply constraints persist.

The current trajectory suggests that extreme GPU pricing may not be a short-term anomaly, but part of a longer shift in the PC hardware market—one where flagship graphics cards are edging into luxury territory.
