Serious Bug: Typing in Word or Outlook Might Trigger a Crash

Microsoft has cautioned users that merely typing in certain Microsoft 365 applications could lead to an abrupt crash—a situation that can easily derail your productivity. While the tech giant has yet to provide a permanent fix, there is a workaround available for those affected.

Neowin recently uncovered a Microsoft support document detailing the issue. The document, titled “Outlook, Word, or OneNote unexpectedly close when typing,” confirms that the problem surfaces in apps updated to Version 2407 Build 17830.20138 or higher. The bug doesn’t just strike when you’re typing; it can also occur during other tasks like spell-checking, making it a significant disruption for Microsoft 365 users, who are accustomed to a steady stream of updates as part of their subscription.

If you’ve noticed any of these apps crashing while you were deep into a crucial project, this bug could be the culprit. To confirm, Microsoft recommends reviewing the Windows Event Viewer Application Log for specific events, such as Event 1000 or Event 1001. The relevant event details include:

    • Faulting application name: OUTLOOK.EXE, version: 16.0.17830.20138
    • Faulting module name: mscss7it.dll, version: 16.0.12527.20122
    • Exception code: 0xc0000005

Microsoft notes that this issue might also be linked to an outdated language pack. In the given example, “mscss7it.dll” refers to the Italian language pack, though the file name may vary depending on your language settings.

Though there’s no official fix yet, Microsoft does provide a workaround. You can either perform an online repair of the Office suite or uninstall and reinstall the language pack associated with the issue. Detailed instructions for these steps are available through Microsoft’s support resources.

In the meantime, enabling auto-save and frequently saving your work manually are the best ways to avoid losing progress. Hopefully, a more permanent solution will be released soon to address this disruptive bug.
