Shelly Unveils Z-Wave 800 IoT Devices with Extended Range and Energy Efficiency

Shelly is expanding its portfolio of smart home devices with a new collection powered by Z-Wave 800 chips, designed to cater to DIYers, installers, and commercial builders. The new lineup includes smart plugs, motion sensors, door/window sensors, in-wall dimmers, and relays, all featuring Z-Wave Long Range (Z-Wave LR) technology. These chips provide impressive range—up to 1 mile in line of sight—and energy efficiency, allowing devices to run on battery power for up to 10 years.

According to Shelly’s CTO, Leon Kralj, the Z-Wave 800 technology is breaking down barriers in smart home connectivity, offering homeowners, security installers, and commercial property managers unmatched scalability and energy efficiency. “Shelly is helping redefine the automation experience,” Kralj noted, emphasizing the advantages of this cutting-edge technology.

Unlike other smart home solutions that require full replacements of in-wall switches, Shelly’s dimmers and relays fit inside the existing electrical boxes, providing a clean and modern look without the clutter of extra visible controls. This approach caters to homeowners who want to upgrade their homes without sacrificing aesthetics.

For commercial builders, the scalability of Z-Wave 800 is a major advantage. With the ability to deploy up to 4,000 nodes on a single mesh network—20 times more than previous chip generations—these devices offer substantial improvements in large-scale installations. Additionally, Z-Wave LR is backward compatible, ensuring that existing devices can integrate smoothly with the new ones.

Shelly is set to release its full range of Z-Wave 800-powered devices in the first half of 2025. In addition, the company recently announced SmartThings Certification for nine more of its Z-Wave products, further expanding compatibility with other smart home ecosystems. Despite Samsung removing the Z-Wave radio from its latest SmartThings hub, users can still access Z-Wave functionality through the Aeotec Smart Home Hub.
