Sony Plans Universal ‘Rewind’ Button for a Seamless Gaming Experience

Sony is exploring the idea of adding an undo or rewind function to every game with a potential new feature for PlayStation controllers. According to a patent discovered by Tech4Gamers, Sony filed a patent with the USPTO for a dedicated rewind button on the gamepad. Published on October 31, this patent suggests that players could use a button — likely in place of the current “share” button — to rewind their gameplay or a recorded video, offering a new level of control during game sessions.

While rewinding gameplay is a familiar concept — especially in games like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or Braid — this patent suggests Sony is considering a more integrated approach. This could potentially apply to a wider range of games, made possible by the PlayStation 5’s advanced hardware and fast storage systems. If implemented, it could transform how players interact with games, especially when they make a mistake or want to experiment with different strategies.

The concept shares similarities with Nintendo’s rewind feature on the Switch Online emulation platform, and it would be a welcome addition for single-player games, particularly for those who struggle with challenging titles like Soulslikes. However, there are complications — implementing this function in multiplayer games could prove difficult, as seen with the limitations of Fallout’s VATS system in Fallout 76. Additionally, even if the feature is patented, there’s no guarantee Sony will follow through, as patents don’t always lead to actual products.

Though it’s exciting to imagine the possibilities, it’s worth noting that a patent filing is just a preliminary step, and the idea might not materialize into an actual product. Still, a dedicated rewind button for PlayStation controllers could be a game-changer for many players, if it ever comes to fruition.
