Biwin, a Chinese company known for its storage innovations, has revealed its new Mini SSD format—also called “1517”—which is designed to combine incredible speed with an impressively compact footprint. Roughly the size of a SIM card at 15mm by 17mm and only 1.4mm thick, the Mini SSD is just slightly bigger than a microSD card but boasts data transfer capabilities more comparable to high-performance internal drives, reaching up to 3,700 MB/s read and 3,400 MB/s write speeds through a PCIe 4×2 interface. This leap in storage technology could redefine how small devices handle large amounts of data, especially in applications like handheld gaming systems, ultrathin laptops, and high-end cameras. Durability has also been built into the design, with an IP68 rating making the drive resistant to dust and water exposure, plus reinforced construction that can survive drops from up to 3 meters. The Mini SSD utilizes a slide-out tray system similar to a smartphone SIM slot, enabling easy integration into compact devices without taking up precious internal space. Although Biwin has not disclosed pricing or release details, the fact that upcoming handhelds such as the GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X are already set to use the technology suggests it could soon become a key component in portable computing and entertainment devices worldwide.
