Uber Expands into AI Data Labeling

Uber is expanding its operations beyond rides and deliveries by launching a new division focused on AI data labeling. This initiative, known as Scaled Solutions, taps into the growing demand for data annotation, testing, and localization, offering gig workers a chance to support the development of AI models. Uber’s entry into this field is a strategic move to leverage its vast network of gig workers for more specialized tasks related to AI, catering to the needs of a diverse range of industries.

Initially designed to meet Uber’s internal requirements for improving its AI systems, Scaled Solutions has evolved into a standalone service for other enterprises. It now serves companies across various sectors, including retail, automotive, autonomous vehicles, social media, and even generative AI. One of its first major clients, Aurora Innovation, develops software for autonomous commercial trucks, while game developer Niantic relies on Scaled Solutions to help with its ambitious project of creating a 3D map of the world.

To meet the demands of its customers, Uber’s new gig workforce requires a variety of skills, with tasks ranging from simple data tagging to more specialized work involving programming or language proficiency. The flexibility in skill requirements allows Uber to tap into a wide pool of workers who can perform different types of data annotation and testing jobs. This adaptability makes it an attractive option for businesses looking to outsource their AI-related work without committing to a full-time, in-house team.

Chris Brummitt, Uber’s senior director for communications in Asia-Pacific, emphasized that the roles available through Scaled Solutions can vary greatly depending on the specific task at hand. Some gigs may require advanced technical skills, while others may only need general knowledge or language expertise. With this diverse skill set, Uber aims to meet the growing demand for AI development services, while offering a flexible and scalable workforce solution for its clients.
