Windows 11 July 2026 Update Introduces Point-in-Time Restore and More
Microsoft’s latest Patch Tuesday release isn’t just about security. Alongside a record-breaking number of vulnerability fixes, the company has rolled out KB5101650 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, bringing a range of new features and quality-of-life improvements that were previously available only through optional preview updates.
The headline addition is Point-in-Time Restore (PITR), a new recovery feature designed to make system rollbacks faster and more comprehensive.
Point-in-Time Restore Comes to Windows 11
The standout feature in KB5101650 is Point-in-Time Restore (PITR).
Originally unveiled in late 2025, PITR creates a full system backup before automatically generating restore snapshots every 4 to 24 hours. Users can restore their PC to one of these snapshots whenever needed, making it easy to recover from problematic updates, software installations, or system changes.
Unlike the traditional System Restore feature, PITR can recover not only Windows settings but also installed applications and local files.
The recovery snapshots are retained for up to 72 hours, making the feature best suited for short-term system recovery rather than long-term backup.
Windows Update Pauses Become More Flexible
Microsoft has also improved update management in Windows 11.
Users can now pause Windows Updates for up to 35 days using a built-in calendar interface, making it easier to schedule updates around travel or important work.
However, Microsoft continues to discourage lengthy delays, noting that advances in artificial intelligence have significantly reduced the time it takes attackers to exploit newly disclosed Windows vulnerabilities.
Widgets and Taskbar Get Less Intrusive
The update introduces several usability improvements aimed at creating a cleaner desktop experience.
Notable changes include:
- Widgets no longer opening automatically when users hover over them with the mouse.
- A more compact taskbar that displays notifications and icons in a minimized state.
These adjustments reduce distractions while improving overall navigation.
Performance and Accessibility Improvements
KB5101650 also includes numerous refinements throughout Windows 11, including:
- Faster File Explorer startup.
- Quicker mounting of virtual disk images.
- Improved Bluetooth performance and reliability.
- Enhancements to screen tinting features for reduced eye strain.
- Better support for internet printing.
- Improvements to Voice Access and voice typing.
Together, these updates aim to improve both performance and accessibility across the operating system.
Gradual Feature Rollout
While the July security patches are available immediately, Microsoft is distributing many of the new Windows 11 features through a phased rollout.
As a result, installing KB5101650 does not guarantee immediate access to every new capability. Features such as Point-in-Time Restore and several interface enhancements will become available on compatible systems over time, while the security fixes are deployed to all supported devices right away.
