OpenAI has announced on X/Twitter that the highly anticipated Advanced Voice feature is now live for ChatGPT users. This innovative update allows for more fluid spoken-language conversations with the chatbot, edging us closer to the future imagined in Her.
Advanced Voice isn’t simply about converting text to speech; it harnesses the capabilities of GPT-4o technology to evaluate the tone and speed of your voice, while also interpreting non-verbal cues like body language. In turn, ChatGPT responds with emotional nuance in its voice, making interactions feel more genuine.
With five new voices introduced, ChatGPT is more dynamic than ever. The quicker response times simulate real-time conversations, and the feature also enhances accents in certain non-English languages. Moreover, users can utilize custom instructions with Advanced Voice, and the memory feature carries through conversations seamlessly.
The rollout is currently underway for all paid subscribers on ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team plans, but unfortunately, users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein will not have access. A ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month, providing access to exclusive features and quicker response times.
To use Advanced Voice, you’ll need the ChatGPT app on iPhones or Android devices, specifically versions 1.2024.261 and above. If you’re a paid subscriber and don’t see the feature yet, don’t worry—notifications will alert you when it’s available, allowing you to start using it immediately.
OpenAI’s Greg Brockman shared on X/Twitter, “[It] makes you realize how unnatural typing things into a computer really is.”
