Extended Burn-in Warranty: Asus and MSI OLED Monitor Updates

The long-awaited arrival of OLED panels in desktop monitors has finally become a reality, albeit with a hefty price tag. While the allure of OLED’s superior black levels and vibrant colors is undeniable, concerns regarding burn-in, a recurring issue with early OLED displays, persist—especially for PC users who frequently display static content. Responding to these concerns, Asus and MSI have taken proactive steps to address the issue.

Reports from monitor specialist site TFTCentral indicate that Asus has extended its standard one-year warranty to provide two years of coverage specifically for burn-in on OLED monitors. MSI, on the other hand, has gone above and beyond by offering three years of similar coverage, surpassing competitors like LG (two years), Dell/Alienware (three years), and Corsair (three years).

While burn-in has plagued display technologies since the era of CRT monitors, it reemerged as a significant concern with early OLED panels, particularly with static or repeating elements like smartphone navigation buttons and television tickers. Such issues pose a significant risk for PC users, who rely on static desktop elements for extended periods.

Fortunately, advancements in OLED panel technology and innovative software solutions have mitigated the burn-in problem to a large extent. MSI’s warranty announcement highlights features such as “multi-logo detection, taskbar detection, and boundary detection,” which employ intelligent software algorithms to dynamically adjust images and prevent prolonged exposure to static content. Additionally, MSI monitors will prompt users to perform a manual pixel refresh after four hours of continuous use, further safeguarding against burn-in issues.
