TP-Link Routers Under Investigation for National Security Risks

US authorities are examining whether TP-Link routers, a common presence in American homes and businesses, could pose a risk to national security, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Investigations by the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Justice could lead to a ban on the routers as early as next year.

TP-Link, whose routers dominate roughly 65 percent of the US market, has faced criticism over security vulnerabilities. Recently, thousands of TP-Link devices were reportedly exploited in a cyberattack on Microsoft’s Azure cloud service. This incident, attributed to hackers with alleged ties to the Chinese government, has intensified concerns about the brand’s security practices.

Compounding the issue, TP-Link routers are not only staples for homes and small businesses but are also used by US government agencies, including the Department of Defense. These concerns have prompted a broad investigation to assess potential risks posed by the devices.

TP-Link’s US distributor has expressed willingness to collaborate with US authorities, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining security standards and addressing national security concerns.

If a ban materializes, it could disrupt the US router market and heighten efforts to secure critical infrastructure against foreign interference.
