Should You Regularly Turn Off Your Phone? Here’s What the NSA Says

Many people overlook proper smartphone usage, which includes regular maintenance and updates to protect against wear and tear and potential cyber-attacks.

Switching off your phone offers protection

A surprisingly effective yet simple measure is to turn off your smartphone completely. NSA security experts highlight that this action can protect your device from certain hacking attempts. Hackers increasingly use zero-click exploits to gain access without user interaction, starting with missed calls and progressing through installed files to infiltrate the system. This process often goes unnoticed but can be interrupted by rebooting the device.

Frequency of turning off your phone

Experts advise turning off your phone completely at least once a week. For optimal performance and security, consider doing it more frequently. Regular reboots not only reduce security risks but also help maintain the smooth operation of your smartphone’s OS.

To see how long your device has been running without a reboot, check the system settings. On Android devices, you can usually find this under “Device” and then “Status,” where the uptime is displayed in hours.
